For 23 years my life has been about helping horses and the people who own them use gentle direct methods to transform their horse in ways that provide far, far greater satisfaction...create partnerships....create personal freedom that leads to unrestrained opportunities to become a professional horse trainer.
I am proud to have completed Josh Lyons’ Accreditation Program in August of 2006. This program is open to a limited number of participants that are hand selected by Josh and is an intense study of reining training. I continue to learn all I can about reining by riding under other world-renowned reining trainers.
Before taking on Josh's program, I studied the John Lyons methods for 19yrs. I attended and rode in several of John’s clinics and had a horse started by John as well in one of his horse breaking demos. I have also trained under John Lyons Certified Trainer, Ed Thornton, and completed his certification program. I have assisted Ed in several clinics and certification classes.
During those 23yrs, I have worked with numerous horses solving problems from spooking on trail to trailer loading as well as colt starting. I was able to train and show clients horses in western, english, and jumping classes as well as compete with my own.
I took time out to raise a family and have greatly enjoyed the time granted me to teach my daughters to ride and compete in local horse shows as well as basic training and horse husbandry. I found, “you learn a lot teaching kids especially your own.”
In my earlier years I attended William Woods College in Fulton, MO, and double majored in Business and Equine Science. I also had great opportunities to work under several other trainers, including an offer to join the team of trainers for the Lipizzaner Stallions.
Thanks to my success, I have attracted an ever-growing, loyal and enthusiastic following, and I have garnered all sorts of recognition.
In short, I have earned the respect of horse owners across the country. I work daily, personally, neck deep, with horses’ issues every day and give advise on-line, over the phone, and in chat rooms solving hundreds of horse issues. My experience is real world, diverse, covering every type of horse.
I am routinely asked to train people on what I do. One of my clients, Mike, repeatedly commented on how he wished he could get “inside my head” which is a big reason I have developed several ways to do exactly that, “get inside my head”.

"Foundation First Training" Certification, Apprenticeship, and Accreditation Program
This systemized approach of training replaces random acts of jerking, yanking and pulling.... breakthrough strategies that neuter competition, allowing training at premium prices higher than competitors..... and my liberating philosophy and practical advice for exceptional professional horse training success.
Simply put, while I could easily, quietly and very satisfactorily "feather my own nest" with a sweet income just from a small group of private clients, I am not at all content with that.
I happen to admire, respect and, yes, care for the great American horse and horse trainers! In this day and age, when people are too busy to pay attention to their horse because it always turns into a battle, when rising costs could jeopardize the security of the weekend trail horse, or the local show horse, it seems to me that someone needs to get more proficient trainers out there that can change these horses into the committed partnerships of ‘old times’.
Certification Program
This program is for someone who really wants to take control and learn from start-to-finish how to have a horse that responds to the trainer’s every command, and listens to the riders leg cues, seating positions, and hand movement, no matter how slight.
Each lesson is built upon the previous... each stage must be completed with a thorough understanding that will be tested before moving on - before moving higher. The course is very intense but it has to be that way for you to become what I expect out of a trainer. Unlike other certification programs that only require you to ‘pay the money’ go through the motions and magically you are a horse trainer I WILL NOT DO THAT.
It is expected that you learn everything and learn it well enough that you can go home and perfect it. If you do not understand the lesson, we will go over it until you do as long as you are giving it your complete effort. This program is designed to be completed within a total of 10-weeks, two weeks on and two weeks of practice at home (yes, homework), then coming back for another two weeks of intense work (can I say that, work?). Some people may use their vacation time from work; however, this is no vacation!
It is required that you have two horses conditioned and physically able to work. That means they must be healthy, sound, and ready to go. However, you will only work in class with your best, highest trained horse and during home time teach your second horse all the lessons and keep it up to speed in the case your main horse becomes ill or lame. Your training - your knowledge will increase ‘tenfold’ if you have a well-trained horse to start with. You will advance quicker and higher if you can focus on your training.
Apprenticeship Program
This program is designed for someone who wants to learn first hand on a working ranch. In this program, you will learn how to address each of your horses’ problems and learn the lessons used to correct and advance each horse. The horses can be anywhere in their training, from colt starting to performance work and even problem solving. The program is based on a month-to-month training contract.
You will be required to bring four horses into training at Sitting Horse Ranch under my supervision and trained by you. The horses can be your own, clients of yours, or friends of yours (however, the owners of the horses may not attend). You will need to work every day helping at the ranch, learning and practicing, and at the end of the day just like the certification program you will be tired, that I guarantee!
Accreditation Program
If you either have completed the Certification Program or can satisfactorily demonstrate proficient knowledge and ability of training and riding then you might be ready for this program.
In this program, you will become a Professional Performance Trainer of Horses. This is the extreme of programs; you will be required to have a highly trained horse and ready to ride six to eight hours a day every day for two weeks. You must already have ‘bootie’ calluses and leg muscles built up because you will get sore... and that goes for your horse too. The horse must already be in great condition and ready for a workout. The program is run in 2-two week sessions with at least a month break.
At the successful completion of any of these programs, and I do mean successful because my name and reputation is at stake... beyond the irreplaceable knowledge you will receive a beautiful plaque that acknowledges your sacrifices, and hard work. Along with that you will also receive an embroider day sheet for your horse, and an embroidered jacket for you.
With the successful completion of the Accreditation program you will receive in addition to the other items a custom made silver buckle to proudly announce your accomplishments.
These programs are designed to teach a person everything they need to know about horse training. Foundation First Training is a concept that we all unknowingly use in everyday life. All who speak, write, read, or problem solve, have had someone spend hours upon hours teaching the foundation work that made these (skills an everyday occurrence) solid everyday skills.
